It is possible that the map shows different things to different 
people.  Like spam-blocking software, it could filter out 
information that would not be useful to the person looking at it. 
  Lupin knew Pettigrew, so he showed up on the map.  Harry 
didn't, so he didn't.

Or, even more likely, the creators of the map made sure that they 
themselves did not show up on it when someone other than 
themselves was using it.
