But the Lestranges and Crouch Jr didn't torture the Longbottoms until
after Voldemort tried to kill Harry and lost all his powers. They
tortured the Longbottoms for information on the whereabouts of
Voldemort. In GoF, Dumbledore (I think) mentions that the incident
was so horrific because it occurred after things were settling down
from the war.
