I agree with your first two substitutions, but disagree with the 
third, at least about the 'calm exterior.'  Lupin has always 
remained calm, even when he met Sirius in the Shrieking Shack, and 
in Snape's pensieve.  He may be 'resigned' to his situation, but I 
don't think he is 'burned out'.

That said, even if someone discovers a miraculous cure for being a 
werewolf, I don't think Lupin would make a good headmaster.  He is 
too gentle.  He is a good mentor one-on-one, but IMHO I don't think 
he is forceful enough to take on the entire student body.  They 
would walk all over him.
