There has been a great deal of speculation about whether there was a
connection between Grindelwald and Tom Riddle, ranging from
Grindelwald wasn't connected with Hitler at all, but was the Head of
Slytherin House when Riddle was at school, to Riddle left school and
sought out Grindelwald as a teacher and was there to witness the
Dumbledore battle, to Grindelwald and Riddle were only two of a long
succession of Dark Wizards who were in turn possessed by the soul of
Very Evil!Salazar Slytherin.
If Riddle was not associated with Grindelwald, he could have seen
Dumbledore in action on some other occasion .... maybe even just a
Duel of the Masters .... and seen enough power to be scared of it.
