I looked your post over, and the only real hole I can agree with is 
him being able to swim after being in prison for 13 years, although 
it could have something to do with his animagi form (perhaps his dog 
form was stronger than he was). 

Carol responds:
Add to that his being able (as a dog) to slip through the bars of his
prison, which must mean that he was very undernourished--yet he's able
to swim that long distance and is later described as "a great black
dog"--not a skinny, undernourished one despite his having lived mostly
on rats. (Gee, I wonder what prompted that choice of diet?)
