I was just reading this scene to my daughter today and it occurred to me
that Harry (and Lupin before him) said just the worst thing in the world
if their purpose was to make Snape listen to a reason.
Harry: "Just because they made a fool of you at school..."
That's exactly how Snape does not want to see this episode! From his
point of view, they didn't try to make a fool out of him, they aimed for
a dead body.
Lupin: "Is a schoolboy grudge worth...". How to make Snape mad in one
easy step - hint again that he is overreacting, and he should have
forgotten about this old insignificant bit of history long ago. Works
for Dumbledore every time.
Anyway, I don't really blame Harry, but Lupin should have known better.
Snape starts the scene being calm and composed, and they turn him into
raving lunatic in two minutes.
