There is another point to be made here. This is Lupin who is talking, not 
Sirius (or Snape, for that matter)  He had to have heard about the prank at 
least a day later, being the werewolf in question. Would the other marauders 
have described to him exactly what happened, surely having at least some 
twinges of guilt?  We know from canon that Sirius doesn't care what might 
have happened to Snape, but if the prank had succeeded (ugh, awful thought) 
Lupin would have been exposed as a werewolf and expelled *at the very least*, 
a point IMO, Dumbledore would not have overlooked in imparting the 
seriousness of what Sirius had done.

I would not regard Lupin as knowing what really happened in the prank more 
than some desperately rationalized hearsay from Sirius("well, don't blame 
yourself, the slimy git just overheard me and ran off, and he deserved it 
anyway")
