Me:
But the Hat did do something, it was the Hat that gave Harry the
sword. Fawkes only brought the Sorting Hat. When the Basilisk swept
the sorting Hat into Harry, he put it on his head and starting
thinking "help me - help me ... Please help me". The Sorting Hat
contracted and dropped the sword on Harry's head, nearly knocking him
out (at least acccording to my American edition).

I don't believe that Dumbledore sent Fawkes to Harry. He thanked
Harry after it was all over with then he said "You must have shown me
real loyalty down in the Chamber. Nothing but that could have called
Fawkes to you." We know the Phoenix is not an ordinary bird. Fawkes
somehow knew that Harry was both loyal to Dumbledore and needed
help. These are some of the things that make me believe that Harry
will be the heir of Gryffindor...Fawkes probably once belonged to
Godric Gryffindor, and he happens to bring Gryffindor's hat (which is
the Sorting Hat) to Harry, and the Hat gives Harry Godric
Gryffindor's sword. There was also the feeling Harry had when he
heard Fawkes coming (before he knew what it was)..."The music was
growing louder. It was eerie, spine-tingling, unearthly; it lifted
the hair on Harry's scalp and made his heart feel as though it was
swelling to twice its normal size." Add to that Dumbledore's comment
that "Only a true Gryffindor could have pulled *that* out of the hat,
Harry." What if these are some of the many little seemingly
insignificant clues that JKR throws in here and there? In any case,
Fawkes is becoming more and more significant and has healed Harry at
least twice (Cos & GoF), and helps give him courage and strength when
he needs it.

Well, that's my two Knuts worth,
~Cathy~ (who hopes this makes sense after driving all night to get
home from Atlanta and hasn't had a lot of sleep the last few days)
