This is a thought that came up while reading a post regarding ways to
control people not through the Imperio.

I hope it hasn't been discussed ad nauseum, and if it has, my apologies.

In CoS, Tom Riddle controls Ginny, and he makes her write with chickens'
blood "The Chamber of Secrets has been opened. Enemies of the Heir beware."

We know that the Tom Riddle in the diary is 16 years old. Even though he's
going after being an Evil Overlord and taking over the world.

The graffitti has two functions here. The first one, is to bring horror and
cause panic (which have their own merit). The second one, is to show off.

While everybody thinks that Harry is the heir and he's been attacking the
muggle-borns and the squibs at the school (oh, and didn't they stop and
think that if he was truly after muggle-borns and squibs, why would he have
also attacked Mrs. Norris?), Tom goes right ahead and enjoys both the
hysteria and mayhem and also the knowledge that he is actually the heir.
Sort of a private joke with himself. And then, at the end, being able to
prove that he is the Heir of Slytherin.

Someone in a different thread said that ghosts stay stuck in the emotional
state they were when they died. I think that Diary!Tom is the same way. He
recorded his 16 years old self into the diary. By Dumblesore's own
admission, he is the most brilliant student Hogwarts has ever seen, but he's
still 16.

Till now I considered Tom to be The Boy Who Will Be You-Know-Who, but now
that I think about it, he seems to me more like the usual teenager (ummm, an
extremely evil teenager *g*).

Probably also had his own share of skin-problems, crushes, day dreams etc
^-^ (in his own, Very Very Evil sort of way ;-)).

Mr. Hilton: Oh, we use only the finest baby frogs, dew-picked and flown from
Iraq, cleansed in the finest quality spring water, lightly killed, and
sealed in a succulent, Swiss, quintuple-smooth, treble-milk chocolate
envelope, and lovingly frosted with glucose.

Inspector: That's as may be, but it's still a frog!

Mr. Hilton: What else?

Inspector: Well, don't you even take the bones out?

Mr. Hilton: If we took the bones out, it wouldn't be crunchy, would it?
