Errol:
>*What* trouble?? As far as I can see, they did nothing wrong. They
>did go and save her when there was no time to get anyone else. The
>only thing that Hermione lied about was *her* reason for being there.
>She was crying and missed dinner. Surely that was better than saying
>she went after the troll herself?

See I always thought that Hermione giving that particular explanation/lie
was out of embarrassment. 1) For crying over what Ron said. There's a reason
she's hiding out in the bathroom instead of up in the dormitories. 2) She
freezes up when the troll comes in.
She's got pride that girl. So she makes up the first half of the lie to save
face.

Now as to Harry and Ron (the second part of the lie), look at how McGonagall
is questioning them. Her lips are white and she looks angry. So Hermione,
seeing how they just saved her from the troll, comes up with a reason for
them being there but fits the first, pride saving half AND paints them in a
good light. As has been said, they didn't have time to talk about what just
happened. So: Defeat troll; wipe off troll slime (yuck); three teachers
busting in looking quite peeved; sudden questioning by white lipped
extremely peeved teacher... not exactly a time for clear thinking. Wouldn't
you think you were in trouble if you were an 11 year old facing that?

Torsten:
>Why no one wondered why the boys didn't tell one of the prefects leading
>them to the common room is another matter ...

Not only did they not tell a prefect. They purposefully snuck off trying not
get Percy's attention. Huh?

Here's what's always gotten me: McGonagall only gives Ron and Harry 5 points
each for taking down a full grown mountain troll and saving a fellow
student's life. But takes off 50 points and gives a detention each for being
outside of dorms after hours. She needs to get her point giving priorities
straight I think...
