Hmm, I've got my copy of PS (UK edition) in front of me and when
Dumbledore first appears, he laughs at the sight of the cat. He also
saya that he has never seen a cat sit so stiffly. He seems to expect
that she will be there. But Mcgonagall is suprise that Dumbledore
reconises her, I think that is because it was dark, in which case her
markings would be hard to see.

ME:
I think it was the only place she knew that Dumbledore would be
eventually. If Voldemort has only just been defeated, then Dumbledore
still has a lot of work to be done and is unlikly to stay in one
place, she also wants to know why he would have to come here, it is a
rather odd place for him to go! She had nothing to go on, just that
there was something here that Dumbledore needed, since all that was
there was there Dursleys, she watched them, she didn't have anything
else to do.
I think she is being careful about celebrating just in case, the
rumors aren't true in which case her help would be needed.

Poor Old Mcgonagall, she has to hear everything second hand, it's not
fair on her IMO, and no I don't think she is or ever will be evil.

Then again I could be wrong
