OK, so we all know why JKR chose names like Remus, Albus,
Sybil and Minerva for certain characters. But just now I stumbled
upon the fact that the name Millicent (as in Bulstrode, the
Slytherin pixie) means ambitious - appropriate enough for a
Slytherin. So I started wondering if the names of other as-yet
minor characters might have any significance. Here's what I
found out, along with my interpretation of how they might be
significant.

Millicent = ambitious

James = Supplanter
(this one I found especially interesting, especially if you think
there's something significant about the Potter blood-line - who is
James supposed to have supplanted?)

Susan = Lily
(Susan is the Hebrew name which means lily, so I'm wondering
if we'll see some connection there)

Vincent = victorious
Gregory = Vigilant, Watchful
(seems to invoke their body-guard roles)

Ernie = Truth
Justin = Just or True
(both readily admitted they were wrong about Harry and
accepted the truth, even if it alluded them for a while)

Amos = Troubled
(he seemed pretty uptight at first, and his reaction to Cedric's
death certain qualifies as troubled)

Tom = A Twin
(I like this one, since Harry and Tom are always found to be so
alike)

Ronald = Advisor to the King
(pretty much self-explanatory I think)

Peter = Rock
(doesn't really seem to fit at face value - but then, Peter was the
Apostle who denied Jesus - maybe calling him Judas Pettigrew
would have been a little obvious)

Marcus = Rebellious
(he never followed the rules)

Bill = Protector
Charlie = Manly, Farmer
George = Farmer
Fred = Peaceful Ruler
Hannah = Grace of God
Dean = leader
Colin = Child
Denis = Wild, Frenzied
(I have no idea)

Any thoughts?
