This expresses my opinion exactly. Unfortunately, all the clues (provided by 
JKR in interviews) seem to point to a Hagrid-free wizarding world in the 
foreseeable future.

I think if and when he dies, it will be doing some of the courier and spy 
work he has been doing since the first book, hiding in plain sight of the 
Voldemort crowd who don't take him seriously. In the first book, he quietly 
spirits Harry away to safety. Later on, he withdraws the Sorcerer's Stone 
from Gringotts right under VoldeQuirrel's nose. And I have always believed 
that he was in Knockturn Alley on Dumbledore's business as well (and someday 
we'll find out what it was).

Eventually, I suppose, some Death Eater will realize what's been going on 
and probably kill Hagrid. :(
