Time-Turner

Several times in the series it's made clear that magic can accomplish 
many things, but bringing the dead back to life is not one of them.  
It just occured to me that this could apply to the Time Turner.  That 
would explain why they can't go back in time to save Lily & James 
(and countless others)  Also why Dumbledore rushes Harry and Hermione 
into the locked room in PoA (barely giving them time to explain the 
situation) before he more or less instructs them to save Buckbeak & 
Sirius.

This is just a hypothetical alternative to pre-existing (however 
vague) you-can't-change-things-that-already-happened theories about 
the Time-Turner.
