I think you're probably right about Snape being in danger, especially at the
end of GoF, but I don't think his lack of on-screen appearances in Hogsmeade
or Diagon Alley is proof.

Snape is not a social being. The trips to Hogsmeade are festive occasions to
be enjoyed with friends. So who, exactly, would Snape go with -- Dumbledore?
Only if Dumbledore specifically invited him, and maybe not then.

As for Diagon Alley, he probably *does* go there, for potion supplies. Snape
strikes me as the kind of person who wouldn't order by owl mail; he wants to
examine his ingredients in person and he's very fussy about their quality.

When would he go? When he wasn't busy -- probably either on weekends, school
holidays (including the Hogsmeade visits, ironically), or else he has the
entire summer to do whatever he wants.

I wonder where Snape goes on vacation (assuming he leaves Hogwarts for any
length of time)?
