I think that perhaps you're too cautious about Remus' thoughts about
Sirius' potential guilt. Pettigrew is alive! Obviously, Sirius didn't
kill him! That throws his entire conviction as a mass-murderer out
the window. I think it possible that, in that second, Remus felt in
his gut that what had always felt wrong to him about Sirius being the
traitor truly was wrong. He knew how close James and Sirius had
been, for years. I bet there was always that nagging thought that it
just didn't make sense that Sirius would betray the Potters, in spite
of what the evidence seemed to show. And, now, look, there's Peter
on the Map. Of course, Remus thinks, his instincts had been correct
all along. Sirius was innocent.
Alright, maybe it's a stretch and doesn't really cover the risk of
putting the Trio near a werewolf, but it's the best I can come up
with.
