I am ever-so-intrigued by this.
"Why?" you may be wondering?
Because the rule on traitors is that for maximum effect, they should
be:
a) a character that the readers are very familiar with (check), and
b) a character that the readers are supposed to trust (check), so that
c) the character is probably the *last* one that the readers would
suspect (check.)
Incidentally, I found another passage that brought this to mind,
otherwise I wouldn't be commenting, being that this is an old thread
and has been covered so well already.
"'I must say, You-Know-Who alone and friendless is one thing... but
give him back his most devoted servant, and I shudder to think how
quickly he'll rise again...'
There was a small chink of glass on wood. Someone had set down their
glass.
'You know, Cornelius, if you're dining with the headmaster, we'd
better head back up to the castle,' said Professor McGonagall.
(PoA, US paperback, Ch. 10, 209)
So who sets down the glass? Well, not entirely sure. But I suspect
it's Minerva, who is the next person to speak. And why? Well, she's
bristling at the mention of Sirius Black as You-KNow-Who's 'most
devoted' servant.
And why would she bristle?
Well, because that's *her,* of course, unlauded and unappreciated for
so many years of faithful service. ;-)
