Wow! Such a lot happens when RL intrudes for the space of two days!
I would have replied to Tom's previous post and done a TBAY (me
appearing out from an invisibility cloak in the Safe House living
room), but there wasn't time. I'm just going to post a few comments
here and then probably let the MD/DL subject drop for now, except that
I am doing some more thinking about Pettigrew (post to follow later).

Thanks for the kind words, Tom! Especially as I don't normally feel
eloquent or reasonable! We do seem to click as mental foils for each
other, though -- a sort of "resonance of ideas" goes on...

<snip out what we know about Wolfsbane to quote in PoA of Lupin's
transformation:>

I just spotted something! I went back to the DADA class where Snape
was in as a substitute, looking for Hermione's line, and I found this:

"Silence! snarled Snape. "Well, well, well, I never thought I'd meet
a third-year class who wouldn't even recognize a werewolf when they
saw one. I shall make a point of informing Professor Dumbledore how
very behind you all are...."

"Please, sir," said Hermione, whose hand was still in the air, "the
werewolf differs from the true wolf in several small ways. The snout
of the werewolf --"

And then Snape cuts her off! *Right there!* Darn that JKR, she seems
to do this often! And nothing about snouts in FBAWTFT, either! So,
unfortunately, we can't tell if Lupin had had enough Wolfsbane in the
previous week to keep him harmless. I'd be willing to bet that a
werewolf needs to take every dose properly to be safe, but the jury's
still out on that one. Does anyone suppose that Lupin will, at some
point, take all his potion and transform into a harmless wolf,
purposely terrifying some DE's, but Hermione recognises he's harmless
by his snout?

Well, it seems I like your theory better than you do! Or, almost -- I
still want a DL where Dumbledore and Lupin were thinking that Sirius
was the traitor at first. That way, certain things that they say at
key points can be the straight truth. All this discussion is
certainly helping me settle on my own view of just what is going on at
the Shrieking Shack.
