>>>Actually, it was Hagrid in Diagon Alley in the first book (it's only
in the movie that it's Ron). Good question. My guess is that it's
hyperbole on Hagrid's part. I mean, honestly. Out of *all* the
witches and wizards that have gone bad, not a single one was in
Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, or Ravenclaw? Seems a bit hard to believe.<<<

Haven't posted here in ages. <vbg> But as I am currently re-reading GoF, and doing it more carefully than ever before I came across something that contradicts what Hagrid said and thus strengthens the theory that it was exaggerated (and it's also something I missed while reading it the previous times).

GoF p.158 (Br version, hardback):
"The table on the other side of the Hall erupted with cheers; Harry could see Malfoy clapping as Baddock joined the Slytherins. Harry wondered whether Baddock knew that Slytherin house had turned out more Dark witches and wizards that any other."

So even though Harry knows what Hagrid told him (and he also may suspect that Pettigrew was in Gryffindor; I write 'suspect' since I don't remember if Pettigrew's house was mentioned in the books) he himself assumes that there must have been Dark wizards in all houses, although many more in Slytherin than in the remaining three. And it also makes my respect for Harry's brains go up a notch. These are his own conclusions.
