I think: Just like the purpose behind Voldemort's quest to kill Harry,
there is a lot about the final days before Harry's parents were killed
that we don't know. I believe it's quite possible that D may have even
instructed Lily to sacrifice herself for Harry's protection. We now
know that D had a significant protection squad in place on and around
Privet Drive (Mrs. Figg, etc.). There must have been many other charms
and/or protections put in place as well. My assumption when I read
there was "triumph" in D's eyes was that some long-ago
plan/spell/charm/protection has come to pass BECAUSE of Voldemort
using Harry's blood.
