Now at the moment I cannot think of any particular evidence of any
ill feelings between Snape and Hagrid or any point where they speak
ill of each other. So ,in light of this vehement defense of Snape, I
am now wondering just what the relationship between Hagrid and snape
is.

This is what bugs me about the character of Snape. His lack of
interation between other secondry characters. We see him talk to
Quirrle in PS only as misdirection. He barly stays in the same room
long enough to pass two words with Lupin when at Hogwarts. In the
Shrieking Shack however, well, he doesn't really talk with as talk to
Sirius and the others.

However we have seen him talk with Dumbledore and Harry but, well, he
have much space in the book if he didn't interact with either of
these two characters. Infact I think the only people Harry has come
into contact with and Dumbledore hasn't is the Dursleys.

Also we have never really seen him properly comunicate with Draco.
There is that one time in CoS where he tells Draco about the snake
spell but thats it. Apart from the odd smirk in potions.

But thats another post for another time. There is one scene ,in CoS
I think, but I can't be sure, that Snape and Hagrid actually pass two
words. Ron has just lunged at Draco after he made a comment about
Ron wanting to help Hagrid and earn some money. Snape breaks up the
fight by taking 5 points from Gryfindor. Hagrid protests but Snape
merely says that fighting is forbiden in the corridors and leaves it
at that. There is no sneering at Hagrid, or the fact that he is a
teacher and Hagrid is merely a gamekeeper.

Anyway as I was thinking this, I suddenly noticed how avidly Hagrid
was defending Snape. Between pages 192-3 (US Paperback) of SS/PS
Hagrid says "Why would Snape do something like that/" ; "Snape's a
Hogwarts teacher, he'd do nothin' of the sort" ; "I'm tellin' yeh,
yer wrong! ...Snape wouldn' try an' kill a student!"

This part of PS has always confused me. It seems crowbared in then
it is never refered to again. Harry never wonders why Hagrid has
this trust in Severus (I like to think it has something to do with
his time at Hogwarts). It is never mentioned again.

Something has just occured to me when reading the last
statment "Snape wouldn' try an' kill a student". But what about
Sirius. We know what Hagrid thinks of him in the Three Broomsticks
chapter in PoA while he is thought to be guilty but what about now
that he is innocent. I am reasonably certain that Hagrid knew about
Lupin's condition. Lets face it a guy like that would certainly know
what a werewolf howl sounded like.

Perhaps the trio's conviciton that Snape was trying to hex Harry
reminded him of the Severus/James fighting when they went to
Hogwarts. What if he knew about the prank, what if he knew that in
all his years at Hogwarts Severus never tried to kill anyone but a
certain best friend of a certain pupils father would.

Aplogies for the rather random topics in this post and the rushed
effect it has. I am avoiding doing my Calculus - integration by
parts and differential equations - even more terrifying than
Voldemort!
