But then there are other pictures of Merlin than the "mediaeval romantic"
one in Geoffrey or Malory. The closest picture of the "real" guy (I think)
is in Nikolai Tolstoy's "The Quest for Merlin" - as someone else said a
couple of days ago, a lot of the stories that come to mind to day are likely
to have been mediaeval fanfic.

My own little theory on Grindelwald is that he was a European wizard who was
_moved into action_ by Hitler and the associated disruption to Muggledom.
Here is a little Grindelwaldian manifesto which explains my thoughts
(coughs, taps crystal ball with wand, and says "dangoser!"

"Fletcher." said Grindelwald, "Figg. And Albus Dumbledore. You have come
thinking to prevent us. You will fail. And perhaps, if you had seen the
things that I have seen in the Muggle lands, these last 10 years, you would
not even wish to try. I believe that the Muggles have become mad,
Dumbledore. Armies of them kill each other insensately all over the world.
They have camps where they do unspeakable things to one another." His face

its people dead. We had no chance to protect ourselves. And the school.
There were no survivors. An entire generation, wiped out at the hands of
Muggles. Does that mean nothing to you? It will stop. I, Thorbjorn
Grindelwald, will bring it to an end. It is time to dissolve their petty,
vicious governments, their little mokrassies, and for wizards to rule. It is
time for Muggles to cringe and hide away when _we_ pass by. We shall cull
them, and they will serve us, until they forget anything but their
servitude. And those that resist, we shall wipe out like the vermin that
they are."
