I sort of messed up this post by double posting then deleting one of
the posts that has another message link to it. Consequently both post
dropped out of the treaded list. So I deleted the originals and am
posting them again. Sorry for the confusion.

After looking at the pronunciation guides suggested by other people,
it seems that the difference stems from whether you think the word is
formed from the root 'animal' or the root 'magic'. Well, obviously
it's from both, but the question is, which is the dominant root. The
concensus of the pronunciation guides is the root 'magic'.

Magi - may_j_eye - many sorcerers or magicians (among other things)
Magus - may_j_us - a sorcerer or magician

Obviously, from my previous post, I took the root to be the word
'animal', and still prefer that method.

But then, that's just me.
