I very much apologise if anyone's already explained or explored this, 
but the explanation for pronouncing 'animagus' as 'ani-MAY-jus' is 
that the pronounciation of 'mage' (which appears to be a constituent 
of 'animagus' and is pronounced 'MAY-j') is pronounced with a soft 
G.  'magus' is also pronounced as MA-jus.  It does seem a logical 
conclusion to pronounce 'animagus' in this fashion.
