Perhaps it was Tom Riddle flexing/testing his influence on Ginny?
Ginny was his (Tom Riddles) source of information regarding Harry.

I also don't think that Ginny's involvement in the Chamber episode
was about romantic foreshadowing of H/G so much as symbolising
innocence corrupted/betrayed. Malfoy Sr. wanted to plant a 'Dark
Artifact' on a Weasley in order to discredit their father (the
eventual outcome of his action was for him, I think, just icing on
the cake) and Ginny was, perhaps, the obvious (innocent/gullible/less
sophisticated) choice.

She was responsible (via her trusting Riddle and his subsequent
possession of her) for getting Hermione attacked and Harry down into
the Chamber?

 'Haven't I already told you', said Riddle quietly, 'that killing
Mudbloods doesn't matter to me anymore. For many months now my new
target has been - *you*'
<snip>

'From everything that Ginny told me about you, I knew you would go to
any lengths to solve the mystery - particularly if one of your best
friends was attacked'
