>>Did Snape say
anything damaging against Voldemort in his conversations with
Quirrell?>>
Well... this little bit is rather ambigous, wouldn't you say?
>>
"Have you found out how to get past that besat of Hagrid's yet?"
"B-b-but Severus, I--"
"YOu don't want me as your enemy, Quirrell," said Snape, taking a
step toward him.
"I-I don't know what you--"
"You know perfectly well what I mean."
An owl hooted loudly, and Harry nearly fell out of the tree. He
steadied himself in time to hear Snape say, "--your little bit of
hocus-pocus. I'm waiting." <This has probably been discussed
before...BUT...at this point in the reading, we're supposed to assume
that Snape is berating poor little Quirrell on how to get past his
spell. Well, Snape was never after the SS/PS, so what was he really
saying here?>
"B-but I d-d-don't--"
"Very well," Snape cut in. "We'll have another little chat soon,
when you've had time to think things over and decided where your
loyalties lie."(PS/SS US Copy, Paperback, Pg. 226)
>>
That little end statement, "decided where your loyalties lie", is
very interesting. One could assume that Voldemort!Quirrell never
came out to Snape, as he was not entirely sure of Snape's position
and too vulernable to take the chance. If Snape ever went back to
Voldemort, he could always say he was just playing his role as
Dumbledore's Right Hand Man there.
>>We can assume that he didn't know where Voldemort was
hiding, for he would have shared that information with Dumbledore
(assuming that Snape can be trusted). >>
Why would Snape have needed to share such information with
Dumbledore? Dumbledore seems to have known all along what was going
on.
>>"I think he[Dumbledore] knows more or less everything that goes on
here, you know. I reckon he had a pretty good idea we were going to
try, and instead of stopping us, he just taught us enough to help. I
don't think it was an accident he let me find out how the mirror
worked. It's almost like he thought I had the right to face
Voldemort if I could..." (PS/SS US Copy, Paperback, Pg. 302)>>
Of course, Harry has been wrong in his assumptions before...
Maria pondered:
>>I do wonder if Snape noticed that Harry's scar hurt when he sat on
the Gryffindor table after being sorted and looked up to the high
table to see Snape and Quirrel with the funny turban. We can only
guess, we may never know.>>
Well, Dumbledore read the signs, why couldn't Snape? Or maybe
Dumbeldore informed Snape of what was going on, and that's why he was
able to hold his tongue so well during his conversations with
Quirrell. Either way, it's plausable Snape knew exactly what was
under that Turban. Though, I wonder how Voldemort interprets Snape's
suspicions of Quirrell...
