A significant clue, in my opinion, is that when Harry first hears
Riddle's name, when he finds the diary:

"And
while Harry was sure he had never heard the name T. M. Riddle before,
it still seemed to
mean something to him, almost as though Riddle was a friend he'd had
when he was very
small, and had half forgotten. But this was absurd."

Many, many other times, we have seen that Harry has sub-concious
memories of his past. In the beginning of SS/PS, Harry has a dream
about a flying Motorcycle. We also know that he has some memory of
the flash of green light that cursed him.

Perhaps Riddle was a common name around the Potter house. Or the
Dursley's.
