Arrgh! (Sorry)

No, this one has come up before. JKR's exact phrase in the 
*ancestor* interview were 'Ah, you've spotted the deliberate 
mistake.'

This is Britspeak. It stands for 'ah, you've spotted the extremely 
obvious error that I should have caught if I'd been paying any 
attention whatsoever to my proofreading.'

It gets used a *lot* in the UK for glaring errors. It's a joky way 
of saying 'Oops, yes, that was a big error, wasn't it?'

So Voldemort is *not* Slytherin's ancestor. He's his last remaining 
*descendent*.

As far, that is, as Dumbledore knows ...

And I remember no canon statement that says Dumbledore is 
omniscient. Hermione's comment, that since Slytherin lived 1000 
years ago for all anyone knew Harry *could* be descended from him, 
is actually far more likely to be accurate.[The Duelling Club
