Melissa then says:

I'm an amateur genealogist and unless Tom Riddle was born well over 1000
years ago he couldn't be Slytherin's "ancestor".

(Rest of her response pointing out the symantic impossibilities of the ancestor vs. descendent of V and Slytherin.)

Melissa you might be too quick to scoff at this. We are talking about wizards and witches here with non-muggle and possibly non linear geneaologies. In fact, Slytherin is reputed to be one of the most powerful wizards that ever lived (or is about to live?) It is possible that he's so good that he was able to achieve immortality or something like it by becoming a quantum entity. The specific word 'ancestor' that Dumbledore uses could be a reference to a prophecy or a legend of the second coming of Slytherin.

There's no earthly way of knowing / Which direction we are going / There's no knowing where we're rowing / Or which way the river's flowing / Is it raining? / Is it snowing? / Is a hurricane a-blowing? / Not a speck of light is showing / So the danger must be growing / Are the fires of hell a-glowing? / Is the grisly reaper mowing? / Yes, the danger must be growing / 'Cause the rowers keep on rowing / And they're certainly not showing / Any signs that they are slowing!
