I just wanted to reply to the interpretation of Hernione as distant. 
I must disagree.  I feel that she is slowly opening up emotionally.  
She has a tough veneer (as many "brainy" people do), maybe to protect 
herself from being hurt.  In PoA, she spends time with Hagrid, who 
says she has cried "a fair few times" (apologies if not perfect 
quote), and in addition to the kiss at King's Cross in GoF, she also 
burst into tears after the first task.  

Hermione is warm and loving, if a little bossy at times.
