Pointing a wand at someone with intent to kill and no knowledge of a
spell to do the job is like pointing an unloaded gun with intent to
kill. If I were Sirius and knew that Harry had not learned any
dangerous curses yet, I might be tempted to say "What are you going to
do? Spank me with your wand?" Sirius however could not be sure what
spells Harry knew and even a bad case of Jelly Legs might be enough to
make him pause.
(I had a bad case of jelly legs once. Inner ear infection. Kept falling
over. No fun at all)
