I think the most telling indicator is in ch. 15, Aragog. Ron has 
been finding reasons not to follow the spiders into the Forbidden  
Forest. But in DADA, Harry gets angry at Lockhart for sneering at 
Hagrid and scribbles Ron a note: Let's do it tonight.

Ron read the message, swallowed hard, and looked sideways 
at the empty seat usually filled by Hermione. The sight seemed 
to stiffen his resolve, and he nodded.

It is unambiguously Ron's concern for Hermione, not Hagrid or 
Harry, that convinces Ron to go through with it.
