The odds seem against Draco ever turning out well. I wouldn't say I really
feel too sorry for him, but I really do like to try to analyze people (and
characters in books!)
One theory I have had is that Draco really has a crush on Hermione, but he's
especially mean to her because he knows that his father would NEVER approve
because of her background. Something I find interesting was that when Draco
first met Harry in PS/SS (I am American, but I read the British version first, so
what should I call it?), he seemed to have been trying to be a friend to
Harry in his very crude way. But Harry rejected Draco (rightly) when Draco
insulted Ron and his family! Draco's only friends are his toadies who seem to kiss
up to him for a couple reasons, 1. Because they are stupid, and 2. because
they are serving the same position in Draco's "posse" that their fathers serve
for Lucius. Draco doesn't have anyone who really likes him, and he seems to
have been raised to believe that being liked isn't important. Lucius is a
horrible parent, and I assume that Narcissa is just as bad. A moment I keep coming
back to was from the CoS movie, although I realize that things in the movies
aren't necessarily "canonical". When Draco falls off his broom during the
quidditch game, Lucius looks humiliated and not at all concerned that his son
might have been hurt. That look on Lucius' face seems to sum up this father/son
relationship completely to me!
