If your teaching methods have yet to get a decent result from a
student after 5 years, maybe that indicates the student really is a
hopeless case. Or maybe, just maybe, your methods don't work for
this particular student.
Or, in Snape's case, maybe he's just insane. How does that phrase
go? "Insanity is doing the same thing in the same way and expecting a
different outcome."
