Hey everyone; my first post here.

Spoiler

space

just

in

case

(but if you haven't read it by now, what are you doing on this list???)

anyway...

I just can't get my head around the logistics of the prophecy scene.

Dumbledore and Trelawney are in the room at the Hog's Head. Someone is
outside listening. The eavesdropper is thrown out part-way through the
prophecy.

Questions;
Who threw the eavesdropper out? Can't have been Dumbledore; a) he would
have missed hearing part of the prophecy and b) can't imagine Dumbledore
just throwing someone out; surely he would have 'obliviated' them first?

If it was the bloke from the Hog's Head (several of you have speculated
that this might be Aberforth), how did Dumbledore know at which point in
the prophecy the eavesdropper stopped listening? Did the bloke who threw
the eavesdropper out also hear the first part of the prophecy and came back
and told Dumbledore at which point the eavesdropper was ejected? If the
thrower-out was on Dumbledore's side, why didn't he obliviate the
eavesdropper, or (if he's a squib or a muggle) keep him shut up in a
cupboard until Dumbledore could deal with him?

Remember that the eavesdropper was 'thrown out'. If the eavesdropper was a
wizard, why didn't he just Disapparate when he was discovered?

Several people have mentioned that maybe Snape was the eavesdropper who
later joined the good guys and told Dumbledore how much of the prophecy he
had heard. Again, I can't imagine Snape allowing himself to be thrown out;
he would use his wand to defend himself, surely?

Did Dumbledore know at what part of the prophecy the eavesdropper was
ejected because he heard a disturbance outside the door? If so, he might
anyway have missed part of the prophecy.

Possible things to think about:-
1) Maybe Dumbledore didn't hear every word of the prophecy. It may be
significant that the version we get is what he heard, not necessarily all
that Trelawney said.

2) There was someone else significant in the Hog's Head as well as
Dumbledore, Trelawney and the eavesdropper.

Can't decide whether all of the above is a mountain out of a molehill,
sloppy writing, or Deeply Significant.

Regards,
Nicholas
