Rebecca,
I'd figure that Dippet, the old headmaster, bit the dust in December that 
year and then DD became headmaster, thus explaining the need to fill the 
transfiguration position midyear.  I'm pretty positive DD used to be the 
transfiguration teacher. Whether it'll become significant later on, you never know with 
JKR, who ever would've thought before GoF that Figgy was a Squib!!! :)
