It might also have been practically impossible once Umbridge,

Minor point here. Snape didn't get put on probation until he wasn't
able to produce Veritaserum after Umbridge catches Harry using her
fireplace, which was right before Harry and the Crusaders went off to
the Ministry of Magic.
So, there was hardly a chance for Snape to resume lessons.
And it seemed to me like Draco bought the "Remedial Potions" story,
as much because he is always looking for something to taunt Harry
with.
As for the rest, absolutely Harry had no excuse. He even thinks to
himself how reckless it is before he does it. The one POSSIBLE
excuse, that he doesn't trust Snape and wants to find out what he was
protecting, isn't really used and I'm not going to make it for him,
since he doesn't.
But again... Snape knew, even if Harry didn't, how important it all
was.
