Not so helpless, he was able to get a pretty wicked cut in on James' cheek.
And he had his wand whipped out and ready to go.

You were right the first time. We don't know who started it. Obviously, James
got pretty good at finishing it. But, since we don't know what the first five years
were like, it's hard to tell how the hate began.

Oh, so now we can't trust Lupin. So, the only person we can trust in all this is
Snape himself. Convenient.

Lupin told the group that Sirius told Snape about the Shrieking Shack. That's
what we know.

Absolutely, Sirius letting Snape overhear makes sense. You know what also
makes sense? Snape getting the drop on Sirius, hexing him, maybe even
using Crucio, and demanding to know where Lupin goes every month. Sirius
tells him, and off Snape goes.

All possible on the path of "not canon"

> I should point out that Sirius is planning murder in this oh, so
> amusing scene you have regalled us with. Yes, funny as hell, isn't
> it?

I prefer to think of it as weeding out the stupid, if the scene really happened as
I satirized it.

But, of course, Sirius was planning Snape's demise, or at least vicious injury.

Did that happen for fun? I don't know. We don't know what happened prior to
all of that.

> As for wanting to get the Marauders into trouble... who wouldn't try
> to get his tormentors expelled any way he could?

And who wouldn't try to get a little tattletale out of the way? When the ends
justify the means, it opens up all kinds of fun.
