I like to use Chinatown as a good example. Why is it that people of a
like background who move to a foriegn country, and spend all their
time in Chinatown, Koreatown, or Little Vietnam never adapt themselves
to the new culture they live in?
I met a Korean in Los Angeles who has lived in the US for 20 years and
is a successful businessman, yet he couldn't speak English, or at
least if he could, he never did while I was around.
Why is it that some westerners move to Thailand or Taiwan or Japan and
never allow themselve to adapt to that society? They hang around with
Anglo's, speak English, avoid non-western restaurants, etc...?
Why? Because they don't have too. They don't adapt and learn the new
culture because they are able to stay trap in a small pocket of their
own familiar language and culture. There really are people who move
from China to London and spend their whole existance in Chinatown.
They are surrounded by people who's customs and habits they are
familiar with. They only have to speak their own native language. They
have food and culture that is comfortable to them. Certainly at times
they must venture into greater London, but when they do, it is always
a very uncomfortable experience. It's like a city boy venturing into
the jungle. They do it, they survive, but it's uncomfortable and
foriegn. It's a mysterious world that they have little understanding
of, and limited ability to function in.
The second reason is, just like people who stay in Chinatown, the
wizards are able to function in a manner that allows them to avoid the
muggle world. We as normal people, have to drive cars, take buses,
and travel by train in order to get around. It's hard for us muggle to
transport ourselves throught the world with out interacting with it.
Wizards on the other hand can Apparate, travel by Floo Powerder,
broom, and Portkeys. They can transport themselves without interacting
with the muggle world around them.
So just as people living in Chinatown of London are able to isolate
themselves from English language, foods, customs, and culture; wizard
isolate themselves by staying in the small part of the world ('wizard
town') that they are most comfortable with.
I see nothing unusually about this happening in the wizard world, when
we can look at Muggle life and see many example of the samething
happening to us.
Just a thought.
