actions for whatever reason. I think the point is that Draco's 
unpleasant personality did not develop in a vacuum, and that 
psychological abuse is a sound base on which to build a three-
dimensional villain. Harry needs an adversary equal to himself 
(grownups don't count) in order to place the choices he makes that 
result in 'good' in sharp contrast to choices that would result 
in 'evil'. The adversary needs to have reasons as compelling as 
Harry's for the choices that he makes.
