I do wonder how poor students go to Hogwarts. Over one hundred house elves at 
Hogwarts, I don't remember were I read it, but it is in the Lexicon. I always 
thought this community would serve to explain, at least partially, the 
castle's size.

On the work side:

I assume a work force of 50 elves, 300 working days a year, 10 hous a day.
This brings 150,000 hours a year. Not bad, considering they do magic, and that 
dobby cleans Gryffindor Tower alone.  

A low-paid, magic work-force could explain low Howgarts tuition.
