> > > Jenny again:
> > > This is an interesting point, but we also have to remember
> James's reaction to Snape calling Lily a mudblood. He is
horrified to hearLily compare him to Snape, insisting that he would
never use that word. Yes, James was a jerk at 15, but his parents
weren't jerks, too and he wasn't being taught hatred at home, AFAIK.
We *know* what lovely lessons Draco learns.

> First off, Sirius learnt those same lessons, and he was a brat in
> his fifth year, and he ended up in the order. Similiarly, Snape
> calls her a mudblood, but he still made it to the Order, albeit
> after being a death Eater.

Snape did something to make D-Dore earn his trust. Draco is going to
have to do better than wanting to be on the winning side, wanting to
maintain his creature comforts, etc., to earn trust.

And there is no evidence that Sirius used racial slurs. By all
accounts, he hated everything about that house and moved away as soon
as he could swing it.

> > > Jenny once again:
> > > True, but James is not a vicious racist who actively hopes for
> the death of Lily, as Draco did in CoS. James, in fact, is very
> taken with Lily, as we see when he writes her initials on his
papers and when he is crushed when she responds so angrily to him.
Draco has never shown anything but contempt for Hermione through
insulting her and wishing for her to die. We also have to remember
that Hermione has shown no none zip zilch zero nada interest in
Draco.

Mai:
We have not seen Hermione been actively interested in anyone. Maybe
> Krum, but that seemed mostly one sided in my opinion, so it doesnt
> mean anything she doesnt care for him.

That's not true. She is clearly affected by Ron's interest in Fleur.

And there is a difference between lack of interest and absolute
disgust, which is what Hermione feels for Draco.

 And neither was Lily
> interested in James at that age. Lily only seems to be doing herjob
> as a prefect, plus, draco hasn't done anything nearly comparable to
> what James was doing, besides call people names and fail at hexes,
> or tattle. He might be called a bully, but he is pretty
innefectual at it.

Draco cast the Leg-Locker curse on Neville in PS/SS, just for fun. He
took Neville's remembrall, just for fun. He has on two occasions,
attempted to attack Harry and his friends on the train home.

Sure, he's stopped a bit, since Harry brushes him off like a fly now
and Hermione and Neville have physically gone after him, but juts
because he is lousy at this bullying thing doesn't mean he isn't a
bully.

> And for all we know, Draco scribbles HG on his tests papers. We
> have no evidence for or against it. Im not saying this will or
> should happen, but for all we know, it could.

For all we know, Dumbledore has nude pictures of Madame Maxime in his
office. For all we know, Tonks is about ready to pull a Mrs. Robinson
on Ron. For all we know, Sprout and Flitwick were in that bush that
Snape didn't get to after the Yule Ball.

What is in canon is Draco insulting and openly wishing for the death
of Hermione. What is further in canon is Hermione showing not only no
interest in Draco, but being disgusted by him.

Now, the canon can be interpreted (not by me) that Draco is covering
up his feelings for her and this is really a wonderful and tragic
love story. But I don't see how the canon can be twisted to show
Hermione feeling anything for Draco but contempt.

How many girls do you think would be interested in a guy who called
them a vicious racial slur and then tried to say, "I was only trying
to keep my racist friends from finding out I really loved you."

Most girls I know would say, "goodbye."

But as Draco progresses through the series, there becomes less and
less canon to hang "redeemable Draco" on.

Darrin
-- Thinks that if a lot of women were actually confronted by a guy
like Draco (or Snape) they'd react the same way Hermione does.
