The founders actually date from a couple of hundred years earlier than the
Norman Conquest (1066 of course) and the real life Merlin (Myrddin) dates
from a couple of hundred years before that. You correctly place his legend
as emerging in the 6th-7th century though the Camelot element doesn't come
into it until centuries later.

But, though Merlin could well have been Godric's ancestor, he's certainly
not the origin for wizards in Britain - the Ollivanders business had been
trading for around 900 years by the 6th century, to name just one!
