Me:

I wouldn't get too excited about this "dark side"/ star wars kind of
connection. I think JKR is going deeper than that. The truth is we
all have a dark side, and this kid is going to have to develop his
because he just found out he must kill someone in order to live
himself. If he fails, not only he but presumably all that he still
holds dear wil be lost or torturted.

There is no good popular paralellel for what Harry has just had laid
on him. He has grown up believing in right and wrong, developed a
resevoir of love and compassion, and now has to act contrary to all
that in order to defeat Voldemort. One poster said that soldiers do
this every day, but soldiers do not go into a battle knowing exactly
who they have to kill. Their enemy is still rather vague, faceless
and therefore impersonal. Throw a grenade, fire a rocket you are
doing your part.

Harry will not have the luxury of dsistance. THe prophecy says,
Voldemort must "die at the other's hand" if Harry is to live. His
use of the cruiciatus curse is only the beginning of his maturation
into an assasin. MAF
