Meg: I think we need to remember that to be in Gryffindor, you need
to be brave, not necessarily kind and benevolent, no? Just as not
every Slytherin is bad, not every Gryffindor is good. In this way,
I too believe that James was in Gryffindor.

Me: I think this issue is fundamentally important to the central
theme of OoP, where Umbridge, rather than Voldemort, is really the
major baddie. I also think that what Meg says here could equally be
applied to Sirius. I've been bouncing around the forum all week
stridently defending/starting fights on whether or not all of MWPP
were in Gryffindor with James. And, as I've just started the
excersise in masochism that rereading PoA is now(post-graduate
thesis due for completion? What post-graduate thesis due for
completion?), I've been looking for more evidence on the topic. I
think I found some. I'm sure this has been brought up before, but
can't find it on the list, even utilising the wonderful,
comprehensive and prompt Search feature.
If not a Gryff himself, how on earth would Sirius know where the
Gryffindor Common Room was? The entrance is just another painting,
after all, and we see in CoS that Harry and Ron have no idea where
the Slytherin common room is. This gives us canon for the notion
that students really have no idea where the other Houses are.

Kirstini, who only has two theories, and is prepared to defend them
to the death, or at least until everyone else gets bored and falls
asleep.
