Actually, yes, Lucius' comments WERE "cruel & belittling".  If this is a 
pattern - & I see no reason to believe that it isn't - he's completely undermining 
Draco's self-confidence.  Speaking as one who grew up as the daughter of 
"Mother Lucius", after a couple of years of "Why wasn't that 98 a 100?", "Where's 
the plus on that A?", & "You let So-&-So beat you on that test?", with very 
little in the way of positive feedback, you give up trying.  ("Can't please her 
anyway, so...")  (In all fairness - she'd had the same done to her by her 
father.)  Took me a long time to get past that - & Draco may not HAVE the luxury 
of that sort of time.
