I see no reason to believe that it isn't - he's completely undermining
Draco's self-confidence. Speaking as one who grew up as the daughter
of "Mother Lucius", after a couple of years of "Why wasn't that 98 a
100?", "Where's the plus on that A?", & "You let So-&-So beat you on
that test?", with very little in the way of positive feedback, you
give up trying.>
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, because we see things
differently. As a high school teacher, I *do* tell my students when I
think they can do better, because there are times that they can, and I
believe in them. It makes them feel good when they are told that they
have it in them to pass an exam or write a good essay. Lucius
obviously believes his son is capable of doing better, and I like
that. There is no evidence, either way, that this is or isn't a
pattern. There is also no evidence that Lucius thinks that Draco's 98
should be a 100. I got the feeling that Draco spent too much
socializing and blew off a lot of his school work, but I can't prove
that either.
I will concede that Lucius chose a poor time to chastise his son, as
it was in front of the slimy Mr. Borgin and Draco looks "abashed and
angry" at the "a girl of no wizard family beat you in every exam"
comment. In fact, I'm willing to bet that that comment is what made
Draco turn on Hermione later and call her a Mudblood to begin with. I
still can't say Lucius's comments were abusive, either, but
inappropriate.
However, Lucius also says that he has heard Draco complain about Harry
"at least a dozen times already', which shows me that Draco talks and
his father listens. I like that, as annoying as Draco must be.
Beyond that, I don't think I can come up with anything new to say.

who just graduated was shot to death and is very sad about it
