Prior to reading OoP and even while I was reading it, I would have
swore and argue fervently that Harry's new pet was going to be a big
black dog named Snuffles. 

I've been saying this for many many many months, and the entire time I
read the book about Harry being in danger, and Sirius stuck doing
nothing, unable to help, I kept thinking that any second it was going
to happen. They were going to send Sirius/Snuffles to Hogwarts to
guard Harry, thereby making them both very very happy. 

Well, I guess, under the circumstances, I can forget that.

So, given that my Snuffle as Harry's new pet, is never going to
happen, I have to vote for dead!Dumbledore and Fawkes being inherited
by Harry. 

I have alway believed that the "Heir to Gryffindor" was not by blood
relation but by worthiness. Just as King Arthur demonstrated himself
the true Heir to the throne by pulling the sword from the stone. Harry
will be shown to be the one worth of the Gryffindor legacy when Fawkes
chooses Harry as his new master.

He who owns the Phoenix, owns the crown.

Just a thought.
