It's a theory which I found convincing. But by the same token, the Myrddin
whom we know today as "Myrddin" or "Merlin" was the _last_ of them.
At least in _our_ world. But as you quite rightly say, JKR can certainly
choose the date for canon Merlin.
It's something which we (or I at least) have to think about quite hard to
not make assumptions - the fact that not only the WW but the entire
_Potterverse_ is JKR's creation. While we obviously accept that there are no
such places as Little Whinging or Ottery St Catchpole and no such company as
Grunnings, there is no necessary reason why _any_ element of our world has
to correspond with the Potterverse, except those which are necessary to make
it comprehensible (people in England speak English not Pictish, Grunnings
make drills not squidbrglgs, etc). But there is no reason to doubt, and
every reason to believe that the Potterverse history has significant
differences from ours caused by the fact that the WW was not hidden from
view before the end of the 17th century (and perhaps even later in other
countries)
