I would like to give my opinion about this. Neville has sort of a
low self esteem...at least up until POA and even through the next
book. Snape is just mean. He was picked on while he was young and
now has the power to do so now that he is older. Neville is just an
easy target and Snape always always picked on him probably more than
Harry. So there is no surprise why he would be afraid of Snape.
Neville's grandmother is just critical and Bellatrix was a threat to
his parents but she never did anything to him. He probably never
came in contact with her based on what was just written book 5.
Neville does ok in all his courses except potions because he
intimidated and that is because of Snape.

By the way...Voldermort was a Slytherin...explained in book 1 and
then again in book 2.
